Male and Female trouble

ecrowell Jan 02, 2007 12:25 PM

I have a Male and Female dragon just short of 2 years old. 7 months ago the male was too aggressive so we seperated them because the female, obviously stressed out, stopped eating and would go to the corner of the terrarium and not move unless he came near her. We were told he was trying to breed and she was too young and to seperate them. I would really like to have them in 1 cage again, but don't know if it is a good idea. It isn't a problem for me if they breed. My questions are as follows: Should I attempt to put them together again? If so, any suggestions on how to ease the transition? How long should I let them acclimate to each other if he continues to dominate her? The terrarium is about 150 gallons with a hide box, 2 basking lights and plenty of places to call their own. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sorry. But, I wouldn't recommend it. Bad story. A Friend tried it with her 2 and they seemed to get along so she left them together. While she was at work, the male bite one of the females legs off. I've read that even if they do get along the the male will try to mate with her constantly and cause her much stress. Some will say you can house 2 or 3 females with a male. I guess you just gotta have a huge area for this idea to work. I allow my male to interact with a larger female I have on the floor. That way I can play lifeguard. He has been in her home before supervised, but scares her after a while, and even in a 5 x 2 terrarium there just isn't enough room for her to get away. And she has a good 100 grams on him and I would say my male is not as aggressive as most.

On another note, The pet store nearby had adult 2 males in a 36 x 18 tank for like 6 months. I think the conditions are just so poor there that neither male really wants to claim that territory.

If you want to put 2 together. Get another female, wait for her to grow to like size of the one you have. Then put them together in a new neutral home and cross your fingers. Good Luck.
