runny nose in a savannah

herpluver Aug 08, 2003 08:56 PM

well we thought it was an Ri, went to the vet and he said he didn't think it was. it is the only symtom that he has. some more info, he is a rescue that came to us with a raw nose from his eyes forward, it is healing nicely and is in a constant cycle of shed. the "runny nose" only comes around 1-2 times a day and only last for 5-10 min. there is also a "hiss" sound at this time, but more like he is "blowing" his nose. he's very active and eats well, i have raised his temps and he's on paper towel just incase. one more thing, it almost looks like it could be water, could he be sticking his nose in water to releave the itch of the healing process? if needed i have baytil and i know the dose he will need, but would rather not do that if i don't have to. i know i have sked about this before, but i'm still trying to get some idea's

From the description of symptoms described, the vet/lab should do a culture of the liquid emanating from the monitor's nose. Then a correct diagnosis can be made. It's better to not "shot-gun" for a URI. Until you can get to the vet, you should maintain the caging at the upper POTZ (preferred optimum temp. zone) of the monitor to help its immune system fight off the infection.

I would be suspect of a URI but...wonder too if it could be something in his sinus or nasal area....something he inhaled? ( I am thinking of this only from Dog experience with foxtales and inhaled grasses) The only time my older sav had a tiny bit of bubbling/wet nose she had crackling in her lungs too and was put on baytril. Do raise the temps as was suggested. That helped mine well too in congunction with the baytril. Good luck and keep us posted.
