vtec Jan 02, 2007 04:22 PM

i bought a dimmer to lower the temp of my uth so the substrate temp on the warm side is now 90. on the cool side it is 70-72. should i add a low wattage red heat bulb to warm it a bit or do u think its ok? tank size is 40 gal breeder.

A 40 breeder is a perfect sized enclosure to allow for temperature gradiants. Leos can tolerate temps in the low 70s. High 70s would be better. If you can include a light that will hold the temps on the cool side around 76-80, that would be perfect.
Also, you mentioned the temp on the warm side is 90. Is that on the pad or on top of the substrate/bottom surface?

That is on the surface of the substrate directly above the heat pad. That's what it should be, right?

Right now I'm not sure how accurate my temp readings are. I am using one of those thermometors meant for the glass and just kinda pressing it into the sand to take a temp reading. I am ordering an infrared temp gun very soon.

Yes, readings should be done on the substrate.
The new temp guage will be great. You'll get a good feel for exactly what your temperatures are.
