Housing couples

betterboa Jan 02, 2007 06:11 PM

I am just wondering if anyone here houses there boas together year round. If so why or why not?

The reason I ask is because at this point I only have 2 large enough enclosures to house adult boas and have been keeping my juveniles in small tanks. Can I ever house male/male combos or female/female combos year round. I know this is a little harder for record keeping but I am very involved in observing my snakes many times per day.

I have large walk-in enclosures for my groups of boas that I want to breed together....ie, snow project, albino project, ect. These boas that I want to get to know each other are kept together year round with no negative observations. They are removed and fed separately in rubbermaid feeding tubs. Right now, my largest group looks like an orgy....can't tell one end from another! My snakes have great temperment, as I can interact with them without actually lifting them. They seem to like the arrangement, and often lie together in a beautiful way. There is room to have not one of them be touching, and instead, there will usually be a pile of them, with one or two lying on their own. I love keeping them like this. Works great for me.

We don't house together unless breeding, mostly because it is easier to keep track of who does what (for our feeding/def/urate/shed records), and if one gets sick only one gets sick. This breeding season one female tried to eat one of our males, giving us another reason to house them alone. And one female came down with an RI and gave it to the male she was with (which just confirmed our reasons to keep them by themselves) And if possible of course I'd rather only have to deal with one RI.
