I CAN FINALLY RELAX...

coluberking25 Jan 03, 2007 05:06 PM

...because Rocky, as I now call him, ate for the first time yesterday. I tried feeding frozen rats to him on New Year's Eve, but he would just sniff them and crawl away. I soon came to my senses and realized that before I got him, he was being fed live his whole life(according to the previous owner he's about one year old). So I went out to the shop, bought a small live rat, and once I released it into the cage and it got close enough......WHAMMO! It was like a land mine had exploded because Rocky's head was hidden under the sphagnum moss. Just thought I'd share the moment with you guys lol.

PS-Once a week feedings okay?

Scott congrats on the name, it sounds "precious" lol. They say you should feed yearlings like every 10-14 days but every week might work if you feed him smaller rats meaning not his full potential that he can swallow. But on the flip side, you get to handle him less often. Glad everything worked out and maybe we can see his daycoat and nightcoat in a couple weeks. You might want to consider a feeding tub also so no substrate can get swallowed (though rare and more associated with mice or rats heated with water) and other reasons.

I feed mine about once a week but at times it goes for longer, or shorter depending on the circumstances.

Hell, my BRB is becoming a porker because one of my other snakes has stopped eating so the BRB picks up the slack!

Some weeks it eats 1 pinky rat and 1 fuzzy mouse (desert!)
