My baby died

jessicakarkula Jan 03, 2007 06:43 PM

Does anybody know why this happened and what I can do to prevent it from happening to my other baby corns?

It was weird I fed him as always (eating f/t mice pinks 1 or 2 times weekly) and the next day he regurgitated it. After that he moved really jerky like something was wrong and stopped moving but came around the next day and died later that evening. He'd been fine well until he died...Any ideas??

First, I am so sorry to hear about your corn. My condolences.

I believe it was the regurge that may have killed him. Some snakes can recoup from it, but some others can't. I have seen both examples.

I will be honest as to say that perhaps feeding him twice a week, if that was the norm, may not have been good for your corn. It is not to say that it was a horrible thing to do so or to say that all your snakes will end up the same, but feeding more than once a week can, for some snakes, end up not being the best for the snake and can lead to regurge.

I feed my collection primarily one meal a week. Sometimes I also measure the situation by the weight of the snake. This is mostly in older snakes. In other words, if I have a snake that appears to be somewhat on the skinny side, I may once or twice feed him once every 5 days instead of 7 until I see a little more weight. And of course, vice versa. If I see some of my kings start bulking up, as some can do really quickly, I just skip the feeding. My adult candy cane corn retains weight big time! I feed her once every 14 days, and her weight stays fine.

Baby corns though I would recommend one feeding a week of an appropriately sized pinkie. If the swelling in the body can hardly be seen, I would recommend bigger pinks, but not making them gargantuan, but enough for a decent meal.

Take care!
Billy
