Water Protection for Melamine

rlk Jan 03, 2007 08:17 PM

I've decided to take your guys' advice and build 3 seperate 6 X 2 X 2 cages that are stackable and interlocking. The cages are made completely out of melamine, except for the faces that will hold the sliding glass doors. What is a good approach to protecting and sealing the melamine cages from water damage? I had originally planned on using a silicone for all of the joints and then lay down a sheet of vinyl flooring and resealing afterward. Thanks

First, make sure you buy a cabinet grade melamine. I would use 100 weight melamine at a minimum.

I like the vinyl flooring idea but it does not do anything for the first few inches of the cage walls. One thing I tried once was putting down a 2" strip of clear packing tape around the bottom perimeter of the cage. It worked fairly well but I think I had some trouble finding a caulk that would stick to both the tape and the vinyl flooring.

why not get some 1/16" plexi and basically build a tray that sits in the bottom. You can seal it with silicone or something similar.

to take the abuse of the first few inches of snake pooooo area. It takes a bit longer (like 2 days to do it right) but well worth the extra work. Take a look at our unit that is halfway complete and you can see the vinyl flooring everywhere. Really nice too as on one end of the 32 squre foot floor area enclore when the humidity is high, it is almost like a tropical light rain as the condensation drips on the cooler (say around 82 deg. f) end right from the ceiling to similate a gentle rainforest shower!!
