Thanks to all who helped my daughter, Largirl, out with her endless Red-foot tortoise questions! As it turned out to be a Christmas present for me, I am thankful to her and you all!

The little 2" or so guy/gal is doing great, eating well, and seems to be happy in the big tank she got for a start-up for it. With your help (and all the research she did) she included a bedding or mixed Bed-a-Beast and cyprus mulch, a heavy low-walled drinking dish, a ceramic heater, an 18" bulb with UV-B, a mister bottle, a spot light, a couple weeks worth of food, and some calcium supplement.

I'm building a bottle humidifer today, and looking for thermostatic controls for the heating this weekend.

My next step is to replace the screen top with a 'box' to hold and hide the lighting and controls, and to 'decorate' the tank (right now, she has cardboard around it to minimize the 'glass wall' problems). I'm planning on basically covering the walls with panels of clean bark and moss, and adding some small live plants. Hopefully, this will make it attractive enough that my wife will let me keep it in the Living Room!

Make sure you keep some air flow going if you're capping the tank, as torts can easily get upper respritory infections. I just lost my russian from a URI, after it rained out his outdoor enclosure overnight.

The solid cover only covers it about 50-60%- enough to keep some condensation on the walls and retain some heat- but there is no 'bad air smell' or odor build-up.
