buying a Reeves Turtle

dm567 Jan 04, 2007 11:55 AM

There are several Reeves turtles listed in this web sites classifieds. I contacted one of the sellers who wants me to send money to his paypal account but will not give me his or her contact information. Is this normal? Do people take this risk?

Is it wrong for me to ask for contact information and whether there is a live delivery guarantee?

All comments welcome.

This is for my 13 year old boy who got a turle tank from his grandparents for Christmas.

Thanks,
Dominic

Unwilling to disclose his/her contact info is suspicious to me. Folks I've purchased from are happy to continue further contact if care questions arise.

This time of year, any guarantee for live delivery is problematic. First, the carriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS) do NOT guarantee live delivery any time of the year. Reputable, experienced sellers/shippers should pack the animal appropriately for the season and, with confidence, provide an assertion of live delivery. However, during winter and in the heat of summer, special care must be taken. Anyone who offers to ship or requests shipping regardless of weather conditions is a fool or worse. Temperatures should be well above freezing (no lower than 40*F; higher for some species) at both ends of the journey AND at the *hub* of the carrier!
The seller you describe does not sound "reputable or experienced."

Reeves are great little turtles filled with personality---good choice! Although it's very difficult for your son, waiting for better weather and a better seller may be worthwhile!

Just my opinion! HTH,

Thanks pat for the response. Its probably better to spend more than to send money to an email address.

I will explain the temperature problem to my son. I may have found a place shipping from warm climate to my warm climate.

Just to clarify,
> Its probably better to spend more than to send money to an email address.

I do use PayPal extensively, have absolutely no problems with PayPal.
But lack of contact info from seller borders on stupid! JMHO!

Great!!! But, please do check the HUB of the carrier! An animal sent from Southern California to Southern Florida may go through an ice storm in Columbus Ohio!!

I agree with Pako.
Any reputable breeder should be more than willing to help you with how their animals are kept, when their eggs hatched and any other info you might want to know.
I got a few Reeve's turtles this year and the breeders even sent photos of their adults!
Reeve's turtles are great with tons of personality and are very hardy too. Great turtles for beginners but experienced keepers all love them too.
