genetics question

stykthyn Jan 04, 2007 02:01 PM

Hey guys. I am not new to keeping snakes, but I have never tried to breed or paid much attention to bloodlines. anyway, for x-mas I scored a male colombian boa that is 100% het for albino. I am curious what would I have to breed him with to produce a litter containing albinos? I know it is a recessive trait, do I need a female that is also het for the albino gene or will a normal female produce an albino animal?

you are going to need either a full on albino boa or anything het for albino

Aa would be your Het for albino....so you will need an other Aa (het for albino) or an aa which would be a full albino.

The only thing I can add to what the others wrote is that it would help to know whether yours has the Kahl strain or Sharp strain albino mutant gene. They are different mutants. Kahl strain is the more common, but you might have gotten Sharp strain.

Good luck.

thanks guys. I am not sure what strain it is. I will ask the guy I got it from. I am sure he knows.
