What is this??????

vichris Jan 04, 2007 09:30 PM

I found this guy when I was hunting last fall. I'm pretty sure of what I think "he" is but I'd to see what you guys think. The color was incredible on him.

One other question. How many hemipenes does the average male rattlesnake have?

Thanks for the compliment. I was gonna guess Ruber, but I remembered reading you were from NM somewhere...

That's a pretty cool story to go with a cool (albeit unfortunate) snake!

A nice coastal phase V.ruber, with his tail smashed by a car. Cheers

vichris Jan 04, 2007 10:25 PM

His tail is smashed but not by a car. See my post to vibereo.

You get those red atrox in SE ariz too. And its tail is smashed, by something. If you look, the whole tail is swollen and if you have messed with atrox. When they coil they hold their tail up. Cheers

SDeFriez Jan 04, 2007 10:48 PM

Crotalus atrox? I live in NM and have seen many different colorations of atrox.

vichris Jan 04, 2007 11:12 PM

The color on this one is what has me confused I've never seen one this red here in NM. I can see why Frank guessed a coastal C. ruber.

What part of NM do you live in? I'm in Deming!

vichris Jan 05, 2007 01:39 AM

I'm in Albuquerque. Did you guys get hit much last weekend with the the big snowstorm? We got 14-19 inches here. I had about 16 inches at my house.

The first pic is looking down my street. The 2nd pic is my snakeroom/sunroom. All of my adult snakes in there are chillin.

Schools are still closed and probably won't open until maybe Monday. Roads are still a mess but getting better. We're supposed to get hit again Friday. Today was the first day since last Thursday that the temps got above freezing. So far this winter has been the exact opposite of last winter.

Contact me via my website I have a question for you.

No we didn't get any snow here, not one flake, but it did drop down to 30's and teens at night. I heard they closd 25 from around T or C to ABQ from all the heavy snow and I can see why. Looks like you guys got hit hard. I think they closed 11 down too going to Silver City. Got to move to the desert were it's nice and warm...LOL! Hope your snakes are doing OK and stay warm!! Talk to you later today.

Scott

vichris Jan 05, 2007 10:21 AM

All of the snakes in the sunrooom are brumating now. It gets down as low as 43 and up into the 60's during the winter. Lately its been mostly in the upper 40's lower 50's.

I totally guessed ruber but when I read you found it in NM it became obvious. I was at friends house in TX one time and he had some rubers in one cage and in another cage some atrox. One of the atrox was a NM red phase and it was far redder than any of the rubers.

reako45 Jan 06, 2007 12:14 AM

Funny, I was talking to Jarron Lucas @ a SWHS meeting on Wednesday about that very same type of snake --- and he told me out in NM they had C. atrox that alot of folks would guess were Rubers @ first sight. Cool snake. Too bad about the tail.

vichris Jan 04, 2007 10:51 PM

He was stepped on by a huge Black Angus bull. And the bull got tagged too for his trouble. At least I think he did the way he was acting. I saw/heard all the commotion in some of the lava flows (EL Morro) just south of the Acoma indian pueblo. I was "looking" for elk at the time.

Is it common for rattlesnakes to have 3 hemipenes?????

I've heard of that and have seen it once in a Southern Pacific, but for the most part I would say two is the norm.

Br8knitOFF Jan 04, 2007 11:19 PM

Yup- Ruber.

I've found a ton of these out in San Diego:

Actually I have no idea what kind of rattler that is. I would go to my Audobon field guide and look it up, but it seems you already got the correct response.

As to your other question it seems no one has bothered answering, all snakes have two hemipenes.

LOL kingsnake food. This one, I doubt any kingsnakes here in NM would tackle. He was a big boy. And I mean that in more than one way. He had 3 hemipenes.

Check it out

My oh my he sure is "packin' the goods." lol. That's very interesting. That is very very unusual. Snakes typically have two hemipenes either of which can be used, but depends on the side the mount the female. Anyway, back to the point, if that third one really is a hemipene, that to me sounds like an animal of great value to science.
