colorful little Nile neonate named Kumar

Gregory Jan 05, 2007 01:18 PM

Here are a couple of pics of it in quarrantine. It's odd because it shows traits of both the common nile and the ornate.

Your animal is from Cameroon! They are variable, some are even banded others have large blotches, pretty good temperament for nil’s.
These and Tanzanian have rich yellows as adults.

Hears one like yours

Is it V.niloticus, V.ornatus or V.niloticus ornatus?

Vivian de Buffrenil is studying this complex and thinks there are at least 7-8 species.
Ornatus and niloticus are separate species, don’t know in witch your nil fits? Maybe they will classify them soon?

Yours is a nile there are some ornates from that area too. An example of which was just posted on the classifieds.

I have one nile like yours myself. They are very nice looking monitors.

I believe his Nile is from Tanzania. Mark Lucas has imported common Niles (v.niloticus) from Tanzania that look just like that one. Check the gallery at his website. Two friends of mine have owned Niles just like that one and they too were Tanzanian. Nobody has imported Niles or Ornates from Cameroon in many years until Nick Mole did it recently with an outstanding Ornate that was on the classifieds, which I now own.

Hello Robert

Maybe you are right?

I usually import my monitors myself, and these are representative of those I have imported, Cameroon is not closed for export, dealers prefer to deal with countries that can keep up with numbers.

the monitor in this post looks in every way like thos I have imported from cameroon, they are quit variable.

JPsShadow Jan 06, 2007 08:21 PM

Also looks like the one above it was said to have came from cameroon. The ones I see come from tanzania are more gray and yellow, more of the norm..
