The "In" Cal King morphs?

coluberking25 Jan 05, 2007 10:07 PM

Is there any cal king morph out there now that is "in" or growing in popularity? I'm just wondering because I hope to eventually breed my female regular b/w cal king in the not too distant future(ie next couple years lol). Thanks in advance.

Designer high whites people seem to like alot. I like normal banded or striped black and white versions personally. There is a thick and reverse striped that people seem to like.

What caught my eye the other day was a hatchling Cal King called a "jaguar" morph, which just looked to me like a banana just not as much yellow. Ugh it's killing me that I've been keeping herps for 7 years and havent even bred yet! lol

There is no shame in that at all. The fact that you've been in the herp hobby for 7 years, keeping and caring for your animals. That is the success.

Don't think nothing of it. I used to breed back in the mid nineties, but stopped to concentrate the number of snakes in my collection to certain species and morphs. Breeding is awesome though.
Gophersnake13 said it best though, your success is how you have taken care of your collection.

I breed and keep a lot of Cal kings and as far as I know there hasnt been any new morphs lately(as far as I know anyway) The High White designer Snows, Black Bellies, davis, mendota, el dorado hypo's(merker line),blizzard snows, mosaics, true blue eyed blonds, Chocalate banana, baja, 50/50's and Reverse Stripes, reverse spotted, dotted, are very popular.(the list goes on and on, Along with the many other designers reverse spotteds, dotted's. The Banana's are still popular. I dont see as many 90% high yellows and Normal coastal/newport stripes as I used to. Even though I have a lot of designers I like and appreciate the normal desert and coastal banded and stripers, especially local specific. The Wide striped and aberrant scissor scrossing are fun to work with also. Dave

To produce a high quality animal, it usually takes several generations of selective breeding.

I encourage bringing new blood into various morphs, but you will not be able to sell the offspring for as much simply because it will usually take several generations of selective breeding to produce quality animals consistently.

Honestly - breed what you want to breed. The chances of making a profit in Cal Kings is pretty slim unless you have something brand spanking new unlike anything else being produced. So breed what you like if you want to breed.
