Jungle Vs. IJ carpet python??

brandon Aug 08, 2003 11:44 PM

Hello,

Can anyone give me a pro-con/comparison of these sup species? Which is smaller, better disposition, color, and differences.

comparison pics would be great, especially pics comparing full grown breeders to their owners, just so i get and idea of how big 4-6ft really is...

Any thoughts or opinions would be great, as this is going to be my first carpet, let alone first snake...that is, if i can talk my parents into it! i can't wait.

THanks,
Brandon

I can give you a quick answer to some of your questions, but not all. I just got an IJ from a show. I watched the guy handle a few different hatchlings, including popping them, and none of them bit him. That was a good sign to me. Then the IJ are the ones that are smaller. In fact they are the smallest of all the carpet pythons. I have a friend that breeds jungles so I have been around them some too. It is a tough call, they are both beautiful! Good luck.

I got a male IJ and a female JCP about 1.5 year ago. Each was 24 inches long. The JCP was very snappy but calmed down quickly. She is now about 5.5 ft and never bites. The IJ (they are in different cages) was a calm youngster. He is now 4 ft. He has been difficult to handle because he wraps himself tightly around the branch and can't be detatched (he thinks he is a different species of Morelia). About 1.2 months ago my house was fumigated and I had to move all of the snakes out. It was pretty traumatic for all of us. The IJCP was in shed during the move and became "psycho-snake", striking at any thing that moved. Since moving back to home he has been very nippy and last pm (this actually was my fault -an inattentive feeding episode!) nailed me hard--lots of blood and the works.
I think that the disposition of the snake is pretty much an individual thing. I have read that IJCP's are smaller and mine is but then he is also a male. Don't tell the IJCP but I think the JCP is prettier, but they are both quite lovely.
I asked the same question you asked 1.5 years ago, bought the IJCP and then decided that I really NEEDED a JCP-- this is the best solution to the dilema of which to get.

thanks for the reply! So if you had to pic one, which would you get? So your jungle is easier to handle, right? do you have any pics? thanks a ton

I have an old fashioned SLR camera, so I can't post or e-mail pictures. If I had to pick one of my two carpet pythons the jungle would win but it would be close. I have seen a lot of pretty ugly JCP's in pet stores. If you get one, be sure to find a breeder with a good reputation for producing nice color regardless of which you choose.

Truthfully it will all be personal preference. Both have great temperments once you get them past the nippy baby stage. I like IJs better personally, but that is also because that is what I have. If I had a super high yellow and jet black jungle then I might say different. I think temperment in carpets is the least of your worry, and the size of these two is really a worry, but IJs do remain smaller. If you want to see some pictures of my IJs, check out the kingsnake photogallery and look under my username.

GO for what looks the best in YOUR eyes. To me, canary-yellow and jet-black beat out poo-brown and pale yellow ANY day of the week!!! Plus ALL Jungles are guaranteed captive bred, being from Australia and all.....

Brandon,
really, you shouldn't base which you get solely on what people here prefer. everybody is partial to one or the other...well, most are. for every awesome pic of a jungle, there is one of an IJ (see Yasser's IJ's and Jeff Favelle's JCP's). I personally own 2 IJ's, so for me I am partial to them. I PERSONALLY find them to be extremely docile, calm, hardy, and eat well. Mine even started on rats which is pretty difficult to get a carpet to do. For me, the more earthy tones (dark tan-brown-black and gold-yellow)are more pleasant looking, but for many others such as Jeff F has suggested, the black on yellow is better. It's all personaly preference. As far as which is more nippy, it's probably true that they are somewhat equal, it's just that in MY OWN experience with both species (I own IJ's, and my buddy own's JCP's), I find my two IJ's (and his one IJ), to be more calm then his four JCP's. Good luck. Both species are wonderful, and you can't go wrong with either. If you go IJ, it's easy to find a breeder that can show you through records that the snake is captive born and bred. good luck
