Gecko Selection Question

tokayjim Jan 06, 2007 01:42 PM

I have been considering either a crested or tokay gecko. I would primarily have the gecko to display more than handle, and have been told about the tokay's aggressive personality. I like that way that both geckos appear on display. Would anyone please be able to recommend one or the other with some explanation as to why?

Thanks in advance.

well if you want a BIG planted terrarium with lots of folliage and such, go with the tokay, if you want a smaller terrarium with lots of folliage go with a crested. cresteds are the better choice if you want to handle it. tokays would most likely bite you. if you want one for display i would go with day geckos, seeing how they are active during the day apposed to the tokays and cresteds which are active at night. all 3 would be a good choice, so in the end it comes down to personal preference.

I would go with the cresteds. A] because they're cute, B] because you're not likely to lose any blood and/or fingers changing their water, and c] because you can have just as awesome a terrarium with a *friendlier* gecko with colors that can be just as bright as a Tokay. I've been told captive bred and born Tokays are pretty tame, but I will believe it when I see it. The only Tokays I've heard of being nice are when the breeders talk about their own babies (but really now, we're all a little biased when it comes to the naughty behavior of our kids, are we not?).
So, cresteds, go with cresteds. :]

Those are some really nice pictures of your geckos, and great set ups as well.

That is unusual, though, to be bitten by a crested, at least from what I know. Is he/she always agressive?

no she is a little sweet heart, i have just been bitten because of "bad aim" when hand feeding lol

Yeah, my crested is only aggressive toward things that she thinks are crickets . Once, that was my thumb when I was holding the cricket shaker, but seriously, have you ever heard of a crested actually doing damage to a human with a bite? It was less than being pinched – their jaws just don't have the level of strength necessary to hurt you. A tokay can deliver a much more painful bite, and *in general* they're thought to be more aggressive, but obviously there are exceptions to every rule.
