New pics of baby chucks at 3 months

gahlenfr Jan 06, 2007 06:57 PM

Since these are the only ones up currently, I thought I would post some new pics. You can really tell the difference between the redtails and the banded. First photo is banded and second is redtails. The redtails have a reddish hue to their bodies and tails. All are eating great and growing. Still not able to sex them though. Tom G. tells me it takes about 6 months.

Do you know what to look for after the six months, I have a baby chuck and an adult female and I'm hoping the baby is a male, but not sure how to tell, the baby is about three months now. I guess there is A 50/50 shot

Nice looking babies, the little one I have is becoming my pal, I put food in his cage and he will just look at it, pick up a piece and feed it to him and he acts like he's starving, sure likes to be hand fed.

The femoral pores along the bottom back legs are larger in the males than in the females. It helps to have others to compare to so I should be able to see a difference by six months.

Hopefully this will help you guys a bit. The below are a couple of shots of the pores on my male chuck. He was about three months old in the first picture and about six months old in the second. When I got my female she was likely a few years old (wild caught) and about the same size as my male was at 6 months. Her pores at that size were not even visible without magnification. The scales ringing them were also smaller and more irregularly shaped.
