Joel and all who was following the color thread...

GoldDragon Aug 09, 2003 12:11 AM

Was going to start a new thread tonight but ran out of time. Almost have to plan ahead to do it since this forum is the way it is You can use a Pepsi (yack) can if you want, but the red color is what we are after. You can also do a 7-up can and you can get an idea what is going on. Monitor’s display color in RGB (Red-Green-Blue) so any of them colors will kind of tell you what is going on.

It’s like when you print something on your printer at home. Most come in 4 colors, CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black). When you look at your screen it may look right, but when you print something, you might not get the color that you want. That is because you are turning 3 colors into 4 colors. Some of the low-end printers only have three colors that print, but not in the “good” way. If you only got three colors in your printer, that means it is going to print all three colors in the same spot to make black. Not a very good use of your color cartridges, as the color runs out VERY fast since you need to print three colors to get black.

This is “almost” the same thing that is going on and the battle that we are all facing. I will think more on the subject on what we can all do to make things better and post more in the next few days. Joel, you are on the right track though in wanting to look at your neighbors monitor to see what it looks like.

Here is three colors that are 100%. That means there is no other color but the color that each square is.

Until next time...
Steve

Thanks Steve,

You sure have opened my eyes on this subject and I look forward to your next post. I am going to get the can and do it, perhaps a coke and 7up.

Very worth while and very informative.
Thanks.

Joel

and different sizes, just looking at axe's and mine that are side by side is a big difference in color! When I look at my son's its a greater variation. On my son's things look more red and purple, mine look a different shade of green and Axe's has grays that we do not see on the others.

when I post pics of the different cans put them all up at the same time and see what you get as far as what the cans should/do look like.

Later.

it's a lot more complicated than that. you also have to account for brightness and contrast as well as color temperature of the monitor and ambient light in the room. you have to realize that the color guns in your monitor may not be aligned or even working in unison and if you have a plazma screen or LCD, well that's an entirely different story. Mac & PC also show colors differently and if you have AOL... well lets not get into that.

the graphics industry has had to deal with this problem since Gutenburg. I deal with it every day. Color management software has come a long way with calibration devices for monitors costing hundreds of dollars, but there is still no end in sight.

If you have any questions, drop me a line.

Ugh! All these colors on my screen..... getting a migraine! LOL

Seriously though, this is some good information and is an interesting subject. Only problem is, we will ALL, ALWAYS see things differently...... No matter what out monitors show, we are human and it is human nature to see what you want to see no matter what it actually looks like
