Nitida Kings....

byron.d Jan 06, 2007 10:32 PM

here are a few photos of my Nitida females. Note the lateral line that separates belly from the sides.... All the females from this line have it - males dont - which I think is strange....

This bloodline is over 25 years old and hasnt been outcrossed.
As far as i'm concerned they're pure Nitida. Lemke/Mintz lines.

.....at least that's the word around the campfire.

Byron, will you be producing these this year? If so throw me on the list for 1.1! Thanks for posting them!

I can't blame you for wanting to get on that list, those are really nice, and unique too.

They're now considered Baja Cal Kings... At one time there were two subs - Nitida (striped) and Conjuncta (banded) both hailing from Baja.
I really dont see why they're not recognized any longer.... To me, they look very different - even the Conjuncta (banded) look very different when compared to most black and white banded Cal's because of their blazing whites and jet blacks.

Thats what I think.... Others may have more accurate info.

Very nice "nitida" Byron! I just added one of these to my collection this year too. Very unique look to them.

As far as they're old classifications, you're right that there were 2 recognized forms from Baja California known as "conjuncta" and "nitida". These were unified with other California King variations through Klauber's work with the striped and banded forms from San Diego County, Cal. It's now veiwed that the same processes that formed the differing pattern variations in San Diego County also produced the same type of variations in lower Baja Cal. The banded "conjuncta" form was often confused with the "yumensis" pattern variant from Arizona and SE California. Blanchard divided these forms (conjuncta and yumensis) into seperate subs in 1919 based on very minor pattern differences. Some as simple as where the dark pigment starts on the head. But, these differences were found to be inconsistant and even showed up within the typical "boylii" (standard black and white Cali King) range. So, these too were dropped as subs.

My "nitida".......
