your room is too cold what do you expect?

Stryder Jan 07, 2007 02:52 PM

My room is at 76. Warm sides of corn enclosures are at 88.

The temps I stated previously are the temps they were at during cooling. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

What is the warm side of your ball python cages set at? It seems odd to me that 2 days ago you said your room was at 68-70 and no all of a sudden it is at 76. I don't know much about corns, but 68 is too cold for any part of a ball python cage IMO. There is no need to go that cold.

I began raising my temps about a week ago. I had brought up the cool period temps because I feel it may be pertinant. All snakes seemed fine wne the room was cooled. It wasn't until I brought temps up for everybody that I had problems.

I thought I had made that clear. Sorry.

Still have not said what your warm side temps were in your BP cages during cooling...

First off, your temps are off. For corns 78 cool, 85 MAX warm side. Honestly, if you can provide an ambient temp for the room in the 78-82 range, warm/cool sides really aren't necessary for colubrids. Been raising them for 8 years now without warm/cool sides with only a normal slight night drop and they do fine.

Second, the first meal after cooling should be a small "teaser" meal, not their regular sized meal. If you fed what they would normally eat I'm surprised more of them didn't regurg.

Now that you have had regurges, give the ones the regurged 2 weeks off feeding and try again with a small meal.

Good luck and don't panic

and I have a suggestion for you pertaining to cooling pythons and corns in the same room.

What I do is, I have all colubrids on one side of the room. These get cooled with a small "window shaker" a/c since I'm in S Fla and it doesn't get very cool here. I drape a doubled up tarp over all the cages, trapping most of the cold air in that specific area. The remainder of the room stays in the mid 70's during the cooling cycle as oppposed to the normal low 80's during the rest of the year.

The pythons get heat in their tubs. I have it set at 95 warm side while I'm cooling the corns to compensate for the slightly cooler room temps with a night drop of 10 degrees (down to 85 deg). The daytime temps need to stay the same as usual. Let me say that again. For Ball Pythons the daytime temps need to stay the same all year round. You don't cool them like corns. They just need a little *nudge* with slightly cooler night temps and a reduced light cycle is also helpful.

I hope this is useful info for you. It took some thought when I first started keeping balls as to what I was going to do when I cooled the corns for the winter with them all in the same room.

I was going to ask about the size of the prey he offered.

Also, how long after getting them to normal temps did you wait until you tried to feed them? I let mine sit at normal temps for between 1-2 weeks before giving them a small meal. Adults will only get something the size of a hopper, younger animals get even smaller meals.

Like the last poster said, give them a 2 week break and then offer a small meal. I would get their first bowel movement to a vet for a fecal exam. Corns and Balls aren't susceptible to many of the same diseases and parasites, but there are a few that will hit both.

what did u feed them and how many? if u fed him 2 in the same day he wont be able to digest them and regurgitate.
and if u only fed him one then try soaking him in warm water for about 15-20 minutes. and check the humididty and temps. humididty should be at 67-76, and temp, 82~87 degrees faranhite.

hope this helps!
