Solar shed or regular?

FredLobster Jan 07, 2007 04:50 PM

OK, so my tax return should be a good one this year. I'm for sure going to put a shed in the back yard so my sulcata can stay outside year round with proper heating.

My question is should I do a regular old wooden shed or a solar shed that would help with the heating in the winter?

I live in Austin, TX so winters typically are in the high 50's or low 60's and usually pretty sunny. Does anyone think that there would be a problem with overheating in the summer if I blocked out the windows and had vents?

It's a sizeable investment so I want to make sure I'm making the right choice. Feedback and opinions are appreciated.

Thanks!

That's actually a bit overkill. I'm in San Antonio and my sulcatas are in a plastic "bike shed" that I got at Sam's. On the bottom is a pig blanket (also called farrowing pad). This seems to keep them pretty warm. Even on cold sunny days, the torts are out walking around. The can push the doors open and get out when the want and seem to go back in the barn every night. I just close the doors at night.

I've got a Kane heat mat... do you think that would be good enough for our winters?

I used to use a large horizontal Rubbermaid storage shed for my leopards when they were about 6" long, but I brought them in during the winter.

Hey, if I can save $1,000 I'll take it!
