parasites from food items

stevet Aug 09, 2003 12:59 AM

I have some 2 yr old snakes I want to breed in a year and a half and want to give them as much variety in their diet as possible. I was wondering if anyone who feeds anoles or other lizards to get variety also gives their snakes prophylactic treatment for endo- or ectoparasites, and if so, how? Thanks.

Also, are there any places in northern california to buy large quantities of frozen or live mice inexpensively so there are no shipping costs?

Anoles aren't even bite size snacks for a 2 year old indigo. It really doesn't seem worth the risk to me. My Drymarchon are growing really well and thriving on a rodent diet w/ occasional F/T chicks for variety. If you are going to feed your indigos other herps, I'd recommend freezing them for a couple weeks first to reduce the parasite load. If I was feeding my snakes lizards, frogs or other snakes I'd probably get routine fecals done every 6 months or so and treat accordingly.
Good luck,
Chris
