Humidity requirements: R. auriculatus?

Neon Jan 08, 2007 02:04 AM

Does any one know the specific humidity requirements of R. auriculatus (Gargoyle Geckos)? I can't seem to find it anywhere :/ I have a Rhac book on the way, so I'm *hoping* it's covered somewhere in there, but I'll have to wait and see.

I've noticed a lack of good, solid info on the care requirements for these guys... I've been misting mine twice daily, once lightly in the morning and then a heavy misting at lights-off, so that the humidity will spike up to 80-90% for a short period of time, and stay about 60-65% for the majority of the day. I've been keeping my little guy like this for about two months with no adverse effects...

Most of the things I've read say their care is "Exactly the same to that of Crested Geckos." However, if they're slightly less arboreal, you would think they would have some differences such as temperature, humidity, etc. It's too confusing ;P

Thank you :]

well they're from the same basic region, aren't they? My gargoyle has been thriving in the conditions I've given him, and I based my care off of a basic crestie/gargoyle caresheet.

you pretty much keep these guys as cresteds. Just a few differences between them in care. First off my guys are not very aboreal, they like being closer to the ground and stay more hidden then the other rhacks I own. These guys to like it a little warmer then cresteds esp. gravid females. My guys love it around 80 degs and I let it go down to about 69 at night with no ill effects. Also when these guys get older they tend to eat less insects and turn more into eating the diet produced by Allen. If you dont have it check out his website http://www.forums.repashy.com/cmps_index.php its got a lot of great info and you'll find more on there then you will here about these guys.

I love that MRP! My gargoyle will only take it when it's mixed with babyfood, but still, it's SO much handier than crickets! My boy won't even take crix any more...

I heard that they do very well on a diet of babyfood mixed with a tiny bit of TRex crested gecko diet too?

The whole purpose in the MRP is to feed as a complete food. Your not suppose to mix anything to it or it messes up the balance and your defeating the purpose in even feeding it. Your geckos will take it, it just takes time. I had the same problem 4 years ago getting my guys to convert over. After about a month tops they all started taking it and actually eating more of it then when I use to use the mix of the baby food. The forumulas have been changed again so there is a variety of flavors you can use now. There is strawberry, apricot, peach, kiwi amounts others. So you see there is a variety out there and I'm telling your geckos will take it. I have the peach nectar and my guys love it.

i have had the opportunity to work with hundreds if not thousands of Rhacodactylus geckos and i have found a certain percentage are very hard to convert. It also takes away from their nature to hunt. Ever think that after generations of geckos getting fat because they dont have to move to eat wont cause problems in the gene pool. Look what it did to us humans. I am not saying that the MRD is bad but we are changing them to make our lives easier instead of enjoying them for what they are and giving them the lives they deserve. My 2cents.

IIRC, they're both from New Caledonia :]
