Jumping Beardie!

WelshBoa Aug 09, 2003 04:49 AM

My beardie is currently kept in one of the larger pet-pal perspex tanks. This has then been placed in his eventual viv with the uv light hovering over his tank etc....

Anyway the depth on the pet pal is quite large for a baby beardie or so I thought.........

He has an artificial cactus which I use as his 'basking rock' laid on its side. Somehow or other he has managed to jump out of his tank as I found him inside the bigger viv having a wander around.

Thankfully it doesnt look as if he has injured any of his limbs as its one hell of a drop for a dragon of his size......

Dont know whether to just put him in the bigger viv now to avoid any injuries.....bit worried though as its 4ft long and I think he would be lost

Hi!

Good thing you had the small enclosure... enclosed! How big is your beardie? (Total length is good). Depending on his size he could be ok in the bigger enclosure.

Also, if you feel that he will "get lost" in the big tank you could use a peice of plastic, plexi or glass to partition the tank. This will let you gradually increase his "territory". Just be sure that you allow for the heat gradient.

I think that if your beardie is 6-8 inches long he should be ok in the bigger enclosure. To be sure that he is eating enough you could "bin feed" him. Get a large tupperware bin and feed him his crickets in there. This is also great because it eliminates the threat of substrate ingestion (while eating).

Hope I was helpful!

Hi and thanks for your reply.

My BD is around seven inches long. Since I posted that he has escaped from his enclosure again so I have just let him use the bigger viv rather than risk him breaking a leg or something.

The temperature seems a lot better for him too as it has more of a hot and cold part now.

Will keep an eye on him at feeding times and may decide to feed him in the smaller tub if he struggles with fionding/catching them.
