Feeding and Shedding

marshian Jan 07, 2005 09:09 AM

Hello All,
My new corn snake is getting ready to shed (blue eyes, dull skin). He was last fed 5 days ago. I will be going on vacation in 11 days and will be gone for a week. Should I feed him during this shedding period or hope he's all done before I go? And what if he's not done before I leave...do I wait until I get back?
I want to make the right choice here, but all of the websites say different things about feeding during shedding. Thanks in advance for your help
Corrie

I would guess that in 11 days he/she will be done shedding and you can feed em before you leave. that is assuming it is a young corn, they seem to take longer to shed when they get bigger (it's also not as often) but even so i think that he should be ok for the time you are gone, but feed him before if you can.
i'm still fairly new (yearling corns) so don't take everything i say as fact.

P.S. glad to see a recent post on this forum

Thanks for the advice. That seems to be what I'm hearing on the other board I checked out as well. Chester is still very young (just hatched in April)...he looks terrible right now with his dull skin, but I'll post a picture when I get back.

I just came back from a vacation over christmas, and this is what I did. (snakes vary in age from a couple months to 5-6 years old)
The two feeding intervals before I left were shortened by 1-2 days so they wouldn't starve while I was gone. For example, if you are feeding every 6-7 days, feed them every 5-6. (keep in mind that my vacation was for 10 days, if you are leaving for just a week, this is probably not necessary)
Then, when I got back, they all got fed.
As for the shedding, I've never had problems with my snakes eating while they were in shed, but if yours is finicky, you've still got plenty of time for him to shed before you leave so you can get a meal in him.

Good luck with the feeding and enjoy the vacation
