What snake to get for a Junior high classroom?

dubsd Jan 17, 2005 11:17 AM

I am a science teacher for Junior high students and have a bearded dragon and a uromastyx as class pet. The students really would like a snake. I have been told a corn snake would be best. I would like a snake that students could handle (with supervision) and is relatively easy to care for. I have read the care sheets but would like some input. Thanks for responding.

Corn snakes are very easy to handle, most are quite passive and rarely bite. Young corns can be a little nippy but for the most part they are calm if approached slowly. A corn would make a great addition to a classroom, in my opinion.

Hey,
My name is Jason Cox. I am a 7th grade science teacher in North Carolina. We have a baby Black Rat Snake (female) and a Brown Snake (Storeria Dekayi). The Rat Snake was wild caught not too far from the school and I was called to the girls locker room to collect the Brown Snake. The Rat Snake was a little nippy when she was first caught, but is very docile now. We feed them both on Fridays and have a great time doing it. We feed the Rat Snake several frozen and thawed pinky mice that we get from the local pet store. We feed the Brown Snake a large Earthworm that we dig up minutes before feeding.
Both snakes are wonderful. I don't know the availability of rat snakes in your area but I am sure a Corn Snake would be just as interesting and even more docile. They are also more colorful. The Brown Snake is very small (9.5 inches or 24 centimeters). The Brown never bites and is very easy to handle. It may grow to double its size. If you would be interested in seeing either snake, they are in my gallery in the US ratsnake forum. Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helps.

Jason
