Weird poop???

rebajoe Mar 19, 2005 11:55 AM

Hi, First please allow me to apologize for the length of this post... I am relatively new to the practice of snakekeeping and am learning so much all at once, it is reminiscent of induced labor! ( But a lot more pleasant and enjoyable!) I have had 2 Rosy Boas for 1 year (as of August 2004). I also have 1 Rosy born Sept 2004 (full sibling to the original 2...They have been such a joy to care for and interact with. I had been playing with the idea of getting a Ball Python since becoming entranced with the 2 that my daughter got for her daughters when a lady brought hers into the pet store... tank, reptile carpet, UTH and all because she couldn't keep her anymore. She was at the pet store for 4 weeks before I came in for mice and fell in love with her and immediately put her "on layaway" (an act that my husband will never let me live down!!!) As soon as I got her home, I saw that she had a retained eyecap and I also found and removed a tick. . I was afraid of damaging her eye so I did not attempt to do the scotch tape thing or anything so I took her to my herp vet and he did a fecal on her and told me to use mineral oil for her eye and that she was in unusually healthy condition. Because she is so well fleshed out she seems like CB but with the tick and scars and non-eating, I wonder if she is WC...any way she tested positive for a parasite and he sent me to a compounding pharmacist for a prescription... when I gave her the 1st dose...she became very agitated and tried to get away from me. Following is the account which I posted on a different board but got no replies to...I hope y'all can help me, please...

On 2 different occasions I have seen my adult ball python pass different sized egg shaped (kinda crunchy) masses along with fecal fluid and material...I have had her for three weeks and got her from the local pet store who got her from a lady who couldn't keep her because of her lease. I have the feeling she is wild caught because I have found a tick on her and she has several scars along her backbone. She is very humble and meek and I just love her to death. The first time she passed the masses was when I administered the first dose of Metronidazole, prescribed by my vet for Trichamonads, and the 2nd time (about 2 weeks later) was when I was taking her out of a warm bath (90 degrees) Both times, she seemed like she was straining extensively and trying to get away from me...poor baby, I felt so sorry for her...can you imagine being her, out in her natural habitat and then being captured by who knows who and passing through who knows how many different hands until she ended up in my inexperienced hands... I am very sensitive to this in my dealings with her as I wish to cause her as little stress as possible...She never ate for the pet store (four weeks) or for the lady that brought her in (don't know how long she had her) and she hasn't eaten for me...should I try to feed her or just wait until she starts looking for food like my Rosys? Thanks for any help you will share with me!!! Rj

Try emailing the Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Service. Their website is www.seavs.com. They answered a question of mine that had most everyone stumped.

Good luck with her!

If she's a WC ball, then likely she'll have 'feeding issues' ie: hard to induce to take food. Has live prey been tried? That's the only way I could get mine to eat... live mice. Failing that, try a live gerbil. Gerbils are natural prey in the wild, and likely, she will identify that as a meal, if all else fails.
I would DEFINITLY say you need to try to get her eating, especially if it's now been months since her last meal. They can go a long time without food, but I would give it a shot anyway, since she's sick, I would try to get her to take something.

Hi... It's been awhile since I originally posted here and a lot has happened with this snake!!!

I took "her" to the vet, only to find out she's a "he" (take a walk onna wild side...doot doot…sorry) and his fecal exam revealed trichomonads... I was given a script for, liquid flagyl and instructed to administer it down his throat daily for several days. Something about this organism kills the appetite.

A few weeks after that, (still not feeding) he came down with an RI...Back to the vet for Baytril. Administer orally for several days.

Tried offering every kind of small live animal I could get my hands on...ended up with an unplanned family of gerbils to boot...Then I decided to try frozen thawed...I took a few large frozen mice and thawed them out while individually packed in used Gerbil bedding. Then I refroze the mice, still individually packed in the gerbil media, left 'em in the freezer for a week or so and then rethawed one, again, still packed in the gerbil litter.

This time I waited until I was ready to turn the lights out for the night and just dropped the well-thawed and still warm mouse at the opening of his hide and covered the tank and went to bed...The next morning, THE MOUSE WAS GONE!!!

YAY...he ate...

Being inherently over anxious, I waited for just a few days and tried the procedure again...this time with three mice...WITH THE SAME SUCCESS.

I had five mice left, so I decided to just try feeding them all to see what would happen...He ate them all...I was ecstatic!!! I had already envisioned this poor snakes wake!! Since, in the course of a week, he had eaten, cumulatively, 9 mice, the next time I fed him I gave him 7 frozen thawed mice, same size, and 2 gassed ones. He ate all of them...whew...

I think it is safe to breathe easy about the longevity of this fella!!! Now I am questioning my earlier assumption of CB/WC... If he was WC, then he has become beautifully conditioned to taking F/T, which would have been my next endeavor...I don't like to feed live...

Next on the agenda...small rats...basted and marinated (well, actually only frozen) in some ripe gerbil bedding...That family of gerbils has come in very handy!!! I am thinking of selling this stuff! Reply to this post if you're interested!!

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this post and has been remotely concerned with the plight of Desi (so wrongly named LUCY!!! Poor guy, no wonder he wouldn't eat!!)

Since this time, I have acquired LUCY, and will probably introduce the two of them when the time is right!

Thanks again, Rj

P.S. By the way, the "weird poop" issue has been determined to be urates...this is after a calculation of all the answers I got from many different sources!!!
