herping PA and NY

dravenxavier Aug 09, 2003 09:22 AM

I live in NJ, and have heard way too many stories of people getting fines for catching herps, so I've gotten a bit paranoid. Does anyone know any good locations in PA or NY? I don't find much in Jersey...some water snakes, garter snakes, redback salamanders. I love finding ringnecks and redbellies, so any locations with those are fine. It's been a year since I've actually been out on a trip herping, and I'm starting to miss it. Just for the record, I'm not looking for any to bring home. I don't like wild caught. Besides :-P I'm out of room. Thanks.

I know that the area around Hancock NY (near the PA border NE of Scranton) used to be a hot spot for Timber rattlers. They are rare or totally absent from most of the surrounding areas. Don't know if that will steer you toward or away from that area, but it would be interesting to know what the current distribution of C. horridus is in that part of the Country.

I may try it. I'd LOVE to see a Timber in its native habitat. Not to mention maybe try to get a few pics
