Feeding Question

Hutch96 Jun 10, 2005 01:20 PM

I’ve read that you are not supposed to handle your snake for 36 hours after feeding. (and we don’t handle it )
I’ve also read that you are not supposed to feed your snake in its enclosure. (which we do do )
Assuming you feed it in a basin (what do people use to feed them in?), when do you put it back in its enclosure. And isn't that considered handling it?

The only real reason not to feed a snake in it's inclusure is if you have a loose substrate (ie mulch, aspen shavings etc). I have always fed my snakes in their enclosure but I use just papertowel as a substrate.

I am not worried about ingesting the substrate, I use the reptile carpet.
I read that you don't want to feed them in the regular home as then they don’t associate eating with their cage, are then less likely to mistake your hand for meal when you are picking them up. I know that corn snakes aren’t biters, but i'm curious about the handling after feeding if you feed them outside the tank.

I feed my corns in seperate containers, after they finnish swallowing and the mouse stops traveling in the stomach i just pick up the snake or slide it back into it's enclosure and that's it. then i don't handle them for 2 days. if it is a really nervous snake though then it may regurge when you move it, mine just know and trust me too much.

i breed over 500 cornsnakes a year , when thesay to not handle it , means to not start taking it out for several minutes , beleive me , when a snke pukes in its aquarium , its equivalent to a advanced phase of a decomposing body , everybody woke up at the smae time in the house , it is really bad , so you want to be careful once you fed it!

Personally hand feed all my corns.. I hold them while they are eatting, outside of thier confindments. Once they eat gently replace them into thier holding and don't bother them for three days. If you get a regurge the snake may continue to regurge every last meal it has. Thats a problem and your snake will die from malnutrition obviously. www.cornsnakes.com appears to be some reading needed for a lot of the posters in the group, it holds a lot of valuable information that is not being shared here. Not trying to sound like a I am Mr know it all, but I think there is a lack of information being presented in a lot of the posts I see here..
