she wont eat

lottasnakes Jun 26, 2005 10:33 PM

I have a 9 month old tang honduran that simply refuses to eat....I have tried smaller sizes ...thumping them letting them run ...everything I can think of. I took her to the local snake expert here in town (snakeman) he kept her two days and couldnt get her to eat either. I moved her to a new tank but have since removed the aspen and replicated her old environment. she hasnt ate in 2 or 2 and a half months. she has adequate temperature , two hide boxes , I am at a loss can anyone offer any advice.
( she has lost some weight but is holding steady. she is still seemingly healthy and is most definately acting hungry)

have you tried braining the food? You indicate she is hungery and interesting in the food but she doesn't strike? Or does she strike then leave it alone afterwards? Not sure if this will work for milksnakes but you can put her and the mouse (frozen thawed or live pinky) in a bag and leave them in the cage overnight.

try feeding it live hoppers around 3 to 4 am they usually take it at this time. If he looks healthy don't worry about it he'll eat when he is ready.

If she won't take live, try a F/T pink and brain it as PHLdyPayne stated. MarcB and MaryV suggested to me (as I had the same problem) to keep her cage simplistic. I wouldn't have her in an aquarium as she wouldn't have too much privacy, and use paper towel as a substrate. I'm assuming that you have her on something more visual appealing as you said you had her in her old environment? I would aslo try using a secure hiding space with moist sphagnum in it over the heat source. Last resort is pinky press but that stresses them out a lot and you should only use if she is doing poorly (more so than now).
I hope it works out!
