found a problem...

emzy Mar 30, 2006 09:00 AM

I was looking at my ball python the other day... the one that has not been eating properly, and I noticed that her left eye is dented in. It looks different than the other one ... it just looks as if it is dented. Do you think this could be fixed by a vet... could she be blind?

What's her humidity level? Sounds like she's dehydrated. Make sure she has water and give her a moist hide so she can regain some moisture.

dehydration could be the problem or possibly a retained eye cap. Having it looked over by a herp vet experienced with snakes, wouldn't hurt either. I especially recommend this if your cage conditions are perfect and she is indeed well hydrated (having fresh water available at all times in a cage usually ensures the snake is well hydrated).

I do have water for her all the time in a repta bowl and I also have a waterfall for her... I have not been spraying the tank latetly so maybe it is dehydration I never thought of that. but I did look at her eye last night and it was back to normal?! I will keep an eye on her... I have fed her 2 mice. Do you think she is ready to start feeding on rats again? She is 4 ft and has eaten them before her cooling period. Should I wait until she deficates?
Thanks

Oh deffinitely she can take rats at 4' long. Feed a rat about the same girth as the largest girth of the snake's body. My ball python is roughly 4' long and I feed her easily on weaned to small sized rats.

It needs so shed the eye. Giver her a soak in warm watwer with wet cloth on her and if it is still there after next shed then take somwhere. keep your tank more humid too.
