just put a rock or something flat down. and he will probably just dig under it. what i do for my monitors and tegus.
make sure he can dig, they love it

Go to Home Depot or Walmart and get a plant saucer. Take a hammer and knock a "door" in it. This really works.

I got a small cardboard box and cut a hole in the front, and then put some Reptile Moss (Its pretty common at just about every pet store), and layed it on the bottom. This way they can burrow UNDER the box, or go inside and burrow into the moss, which you can keep moist with a spray bottle. The only downside is you have to take it out when feeding crickets, they tend to go under or in it.

i just use a modified Rete's stack. Instead of having several levels you can have just one....3 sides and a top! Smaller Tegus would benefit from a regular multilevel Rete's. If you are not familiar with a Rete's visit the monitor forum and do a search or I believe ProExotics has photos on their website. Very easy to build.
