Help Finding Eastern Milksnakes!

markhufeld Aug 09, 2003 12:04 PM

I am desperately looking for CB or WC Eastern Milksnakes, especially adult/sub-adult females so I can condition them for breeding next season. I have a colony of 7 adults and 14 juveniles, with only 1 adult female. I am not a dealer and dont sell snakes, this is my hobby. I can purchase or trade. Thanks in advance, Mark Hufeld

I caught a eastern milk earlier this summer and it just so happenned that a month after I caught it, it laid 9 eggs. My friend and I have been looking for snakes and other reptiles for 3 years now and this summer was the first time we ever saw an eastern milk snake and it ended up being 2 under one rock. We caught them on this little nature trail where there is a stream and next to the stream is about a mile of stone boulders all over the ground so we just started lifting the boulders and there it was. All I can say is good luck.

Thanks Cito, the problem is 2 herniated discs and arthritis in my hips and knees keeps me from spending time in the field. That and the fact that I ended up in Metro Detroit and there isnt a Milksnake for 100 mile radius. There is no $$$ in Easterns so they are not commercially bred and must be obtained from the wild. And a lot of people have trouble getting them to eat, especially the babies. If you hatch those eggs, heres some tips. Take a sterile pin or needle and push it through the nostril of a thawed pinkie into the brain. Lightly squeeze the head till a drop of matter comes out the nostril and serve! If that doesnt work, get a sweater box with substrate in it and set it on your lap. Take the baby by the neck and rub a dead pinkie on its lips until it opens its mouth and bites it. Set it down gently and dont move. They will usually start swallowing it. You will have to stay still until they are done and may spit it out if disturbed. You may have to try it more than once but Ive raised about 150 baby Easterns and never had one I couldnt get to eat eventually. Let me know if you want to swap some hatchlings! Good Luck -Mark

Could I ask yo a question? You seem to know alot about the milk snake, I have a snake in my yard, on the top side of the snake, the color is dark gray, but on the underside the colors are a wide band of white, little band of black, and a wide band of orange. You can see that there are stripes under the dark gray on top, just that you can't make out the color. Is it a Milk Snake? Do they get a dark gray color on them. It is about 2 feet long, not aggressive. I'm trying to find out some info on what kind of snake it could be. Thanks in Advance.
