Native to NC?

JonHart Aug 09, 2003 12:46 PM

Hey there. This little guy wandered in my back door last not and almost got ate up by the dog. I'm a reptile guy and I dont know a whole lot about frogs. Its obviously some kind of green tree frog. But what kind? and where are they native to? I wasnt sure if they were native to North Carolina. I'd never seen one before.

Just a curious inquiry

I have not seen enough of these to be an expert, but there is enough yellow on this frog for it not to be a green tree frog.

There is a great book you can buy, Amphibians and Reptiles of the Carolinas and Virginia. It is kind of old but has good pictures and descriptions.

Do us a favor next time, crop and reduce the size of the picture.

Ha! Now I feel dumb. . .I forgot I own that book. I just like using the forums so much. I didnt think it was the American Green Tree frog because it lacks all the markings. Especially the large white line going down its side. Thanks for the help!

Im pretty sure its a green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) native to Southern California but currently spreading North due to climate change.

Actually that's not correct. That is hyla cinera the American Green Treefrog. You are thinking of the Whites' Treefrog, native to Australia.

cheshireycat Aug 09, 2003 07:20 PM

Green tree frogs, in the american sense, are native to the Eastern portion of the U.S., not California. And they have a wide range in latitude, so they north of even the Carolinas.

Anyway, that's hyla cinerea. Litoria caerulea is the White's tree frog (a.k.a. green tree frog in Australia) which is an Australian frog. Hope this cleared it up!
