Flapneck emergenecy...he just keeps diggin

flapneck Jun 02, 2005 12:33 PM

I bought a flapneck chameleon about a month ago, he has been eating well, drinking, physically sound, no problems that I can see.
Just rescently he started become restless, and climbing around often on the floor of te cage! Then he started digging in the moss, so then I put a container in with moist soil, and put in some earth worms and meal worms. He just digs right past these!
Could "He" be a "She"? and she is looking for a place to depost her eggs? It is a wild caught chameleon, could it have bred before capture?
It hasn't always been so restless, he has been quite content in his huge 65 gal open air cage, with dripping water, plants...I take him out side a few times a week while I am doing yard work and he is handlable.
ANy help would be great! He has been digging for an hour or so now, not stopping?
thanks

Sounds to me it is very likely your cham is a female and she is desparately trying to find a place to lay eggs. Prepare a egg laying box for her. Not sure what would be ideal for this type of Cham but a mixture of sand, vermiculite and water (so it clumps when squeezed but no water leaks out). A board or moss over part of the sand may give her somemore privacy as well. The sand should be 8"-12" deep and heated with a lamp.

Thank you, that is what I was thinking!
So, now to update you, SHE, has dug a tunnle this morning in a flat of sandy moist soil that I proved for her under her tree, and is now deposting her eggs!!! there was one on the top of the soil this morning before she began to dig, unfortuneatly it had a small hole in it, I think I had gotten steped on by her, so I removed it.
What kind of direction can be offered now after she finishes? I have read that it is best to place the eggs in plastic container about a third covered in moist potting soil/vermiculite, with a maintained temp of about72-75 degrees? and to poke holes into the lid of the continers? ANy suggetsions or other advice would greatly be appreciated!

Unfortunately I don't know the best temps to incubate cham. If the temps and humidity is what you have read to be best, I would go with that. The incubation container is good as well.

She has now for a few days been not moving around much, just staying in one place, she is eating and drinking, but just not very active. She isn't sleeping during the day, and that is good,...
