Need help, my peaceful IG has gone NASTY and may be sick

diabolical Jun 30, 2005 10:48 PM

First lemme give you some background:

Marley is about 11-12 years old. I rescued him about 5 years ago from a family that had way too many animals. He came to me with a seriously injured -but healed- tail. The top 3 joints are fused, he cannot whip it at people. He can move it behind those joints. My guess now is maybe an injury combined with an inappropriate diet/lighting situation led to it. He is able to get around fine despite it so it hasnt been an issue, in fact i suspect it probably led to his temper, knowing that he was missing a crucial defense.

I immediatly put him under UVB, provided heat from below and a basking lamp. His diet has consisted of a lot of kale and yellow sqaush with carrots. I get him dandelion greens and swiss chard to supplement it. Also the occasional banana, and treats like watrermelon. His favorite is oddly enough carrots. I try not to feed him too many because I notice him pick them out and leave greens for later.

He has always been a healthy, green, downright friendly iguana. I give him free roam because he is so good. He moves all over the house chasing sunbeams and exploring. He is even trained to poop in the bathtub. He waits for me to put him in twice a day, or if Im not there he'll go on the tile next to the tub.

Recently he has turned a noticeable shade of orange mixed with his green. He has also gotten very aggressive. I had him to the vet a few months ago and was told that his kidneys were somewhat enlarged. Since then I've been trying to get as much fluid in him as possible. I've got a 15 gallon shallow tuperware style tub filled with about 4 inches of water for him right next to the basking station and where he eats. He never drinks from it, just occasionaly poops in it.

The way the vet was talking, his kidneys could go either way. I dont know if that can lead to his color change or not. Could the carrots cause it? I know all about males and their sexual agression, but I'm not quite sure thats what it is. He's always been a very laid back ig. So now having him charge me ( a male) when I walk in the door or near his basking station snapping and hissing, it just makes me think theres something more to it.

RECENT symptoms:
reduced appetite
refusal to drink water
turned from green to orange
has gottan quite agressive (I've been bit twice in five years with him, both in the past two weeks, today I needed stiches)

What he has:
heating pad 24X7
basking lamp (60 watt infared) 24X7
UVB lighting 10" above 15X7
ample food
ample water

ALso its fair to note he recently cut the last 4 inches of his tail off on something. I never figured out what, but dressed the wound and kept it clean. It was a deep cut, past the bit of cartiledge, so i basically had to wait for the extra peice to fall off which it did after a swim/bath a few weeks later. Since then it hasnt seemed to bother him.

Sorry for the long post, but I am trying to cover all my bases here. I'd appreciate any advice you could give me.

male iquanas normally go through a stage were they are aggressive and tempermental. This is the onset of mating season. However the fact the vet thinks there are problems with is kidneys should be monitored. I think the orange/yellow coloration is normal mating season color changes, but I am not 100% sure.

To encourage your iguana to drink, you could add some gaterade or non citrus juice to the water. (very diluted, just enough to give flavor). Also a smaller bowl may be better so he can't get into the bowl to soak and poop in.

I ALSO HAVE AN IGUANA THAT HAS GOTTEN VERY AGRESSIVELATELY.HE HAS RECENTLY STARTED TRYING TO ATTACK HIMSELF IN THE MIRROR IN HIS CAGE AND WHENEVER ANYONE WALKS INTO THE ROOM HE STARTS BOBBING HIS HEAD AND SWINGING HIS TAIL. LAST WEEK WHEN I TRIED TO FEED HIM HE BIT ME HARD ENOUGH THAT I HAD TO GO TO THE ER AND BE TREATED. I THOUGHT MAYBE HE EITHER WAS GETTING OVERHEATED IN HIS CAGE OR MAYBE HE HAS OUTGROWN HIS CAGE.ANY IDEAS? HELP

My ig has never been other than aggressive, so I'll suggest some handling ideas. I have not been bitten for several yeears now.

My Diablo knows when it's feeding time, so he goes to that end of the cage every morning (phooey!). But, as long as I move slowly to retrieve his feeding dish, he will close his eyes and pretend I am not there. Then I can clean and refill his dish in safety. The key is moving s-l-o-w-l-y. Plus, doing it the same way each day. He HAS to know that his environment is safe.

Same idea with his water dish (which Diablo uses as his toilet). Once he realises it's just me, he can shut his eyes and thus, there is no visible danger to whip his tail or bite at.

It took the two of us a year or more to work out this procedure, but Diablo is quite capable of removing the tip from a little finger or breaking his tail open (risking infection). That is why my wife has given me an ultimatum to get rid of him, as no one else but me has the patience to handle the poor wee fellow.

I don't know if these ideas will work on a temporary situation like rutting season, but it's worth a try. If you're not too far away I'll bring you to my place and SHOW you how easy it can be!

Good luck!
