uro substrate

budda Aug 14, 2005 12:28 AM

i have my nigerian in a 40gal breeder with sand substrate. I swap out a few scoops of sand every month. been about a year now i think i should do a full substrate change
what type of sand should i use? I currently use HDepot "play sand" but i can get 'pool filter' sand for free can i use this? I heard about it for aquarium use ever heard of it for herp use?

Not sure about the pool filter sand. What you need to watch out for is ensuring the grains are fine and not sharp edged. Also, you want to ensure it isn't made out of silica. Washed play sand tends to be silica free due to the irritation it causes when the silica dust is inhaled.

If you can find out what the pool sand is silica free, or doesn't include any chemicals to assist filtration ( may have charcoal but that would be fairly obvious due to it's black or charcoal grey color *grin*) and it's fine grained, it should be fine for your uro.
