Help! Savanna not eating!

Arcreya Sep 24, 2005 05:52 PM

I have a little Savannah Monitor at the petstore that I work at. We have had him in for about 3 weeks now. At first he was eating fine, both crickets and pinkies. But I have not seen him eat for about a week now and he seems lethargic.

I moved his tank today (put it up a little higher so he can't see so many customers) and I cleaned and disinfected everything. His temp is about 85 with a basking spot of about 100. He has a big water dish to soak in and he uses it often.

To think back, we had an incident of a loose cockateil about a week ago and I happened to find the bird ontop of the Savanna tank. Could this have possibly done anything to make him stop eating?

Any tips to get him eating again??

Molly

I started force feeding that little Savannah. He is not doing so well. I have been feeding him a mixture of wet dog food and water with a bit of vitamin supplement and electrolite booster. I feed it to him with a syringe.

Any tips PLEASE!!!!!

Well, I force fed the little Savannah for a bit. I also moved his cage and raised his temp. The other day he was looking a little more lively, so I offered him a cricket and a mealworm, but he showed no interest. The I offered him a butterworm and he took it right away!!! He ate two of them!!!

Then yesterday he ate 2 crickets. If this keeps up I'll offer him a pinkie!!

I'm pretty excited about it. There was a couple days I went in and thought he was dead, so this is a HUGE improvement.

Make sure the basking temp. is high enough, 100-110F

How long have you had him for? If he is newly acquired, let him be for a week, and don't disturb him. Once he is accustomed to the new surrounding and not so stressed out he will eat.

We had him for about 3 months... he was eating fine for the first month, then had a run in with a loose cockatiel and he stopped eating about 4 days later. All his basking temps and everything were fine for his species, and I made sure he was getting water everyday. I even moved his tank so he would not be bothered with customer traffic, and made sure everything was regularily disinfected and kept perfect.

Unfortunatly the little guy didn't make it... he died about 3 weeks ago. I had been force feeding him with a syringe the last little bit and he was just getting worse. I was talking to another seasoned reptile guy, he thinks he may have ingested quite a mass of foreign stomach bacteria/virus/parasites from eating cockateil droppings, but no one knows.

I was pretty upset about it. I have a Savannah of my own here at home, so to see such a sweet little baby die was pretty disheartening.
