Loss of use of tail?

bluecham20 Oct 14, 2005 09:38 AM

Hi everyone,
I'm new here and I'm having a problem with my male veiled chameleon. The last couple of days I've noticed that he is no longer curling his tail when he sleeps. He is also not able to use it to balance himself and climb around his branches, thus hanging around the lower branches of his cage. The last few of nights he's slept hanging upside down (hanging on with his feet only) unable to hold himself up on any of his branches. His grip is still very good, no sign of weakness. The problem is because of his balance being off he's falling a lot!

He's 3 years old, CB, lives in a very large screen cage with a wooden back. His basking temps range from 85 - 95 degrees, temps in lower part of his cage and shade around 70 - 75 degrees. He still drinks well but has only been eating supers and silk worms for the last 6 months -- won't touch crickets. But, the last couple of days he's only eaten a couple of super's. His food is dusted every couple of weeks with calcium and once a month with an over all vitamin powder (lightly). Full spectrum lighting, he gets misted 3 times a day with this cage drying out between mistings.

I don't have much faith in my herp vet (who is also the only game in town) but obviously I am going to take him over the weekend to see what she thinks.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why he has lost use of his tail, and is it something that can be rectified? I've been keeping chameleons for 4 years now and have never come across anything like this before.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Im probably too late, but that seems like one of the symptoms of Metabolic Bone Disease.
