What kind of basking light where you using? I have never had a basking light explode though I have had a UVB florescent tube break and fall from the fixture (the end cap on the tube h ad been damaged in shipping and after awhile it finally broke and sent the entire tube crashing and shattering in the cage, fortunately my bearded dragon was behind his driftwood basking spot and this shielded him from all the glass.
Sometimes the basking bulbs get too hot and could shatter because of it, or it could be a manufactorer defect. Also, if you mist your dragon, droplets of water from the mister may have struck the hot bulb and caused it to explode (not sure if you were present when it exploded or if you just heard it or noticed it afterwards.) Some mercury vabour bulbs, if not mounted correctly or the glass over the bulb was handled to much when screwed in, could explode (also, if they are mounted incorrectly), or manufactorer defects could cause this as well.
We have had the bulbs explode as well. However, it was when the light had been on all day and someone or something tapped up against the lamp. It's never exploded when it's been off. Glad to hear your Dino is doing good and was not harmed!
Our light hasn't exploded, but it did melt part of the plastic track on the top of the enclosure where the screen lid is shoved in. Ooops!
