KINGSTON WHIG-STANDARD (Ontario) 09 May 06 Better luck this time for gecko: Missing Lucky is replaced with new lizard (Ian MacAlpine )
Luck may have run out for Lucky the gecko.
The small tropical lizard, part of a species gaining popularity as a pet, was one of four exotic animals that survived a fire last summer at Roy's Pet Shop on Middle Road.
When Traci Minaker-Silver heard Lucky needed a home after the fire, she and her eight-year-old son, J.D., were willing to add Lucky to their extensive list of household pets.
They also own 10 donkeys, seven horses, two goats, three dogs and seven cats.
Soon, Minaker-Silver decided to move Lucky and his aquarium into the main greenhouse at Minaker's Flower Centre, of which she is a part-owner.
"We thought the greenhouse would be ideal for him," said Minaker-Silver.
But Lucky has been missing from his aquarium since late April.
Since geckos are unable to climb glass, Minaker-Silver concludes that Lucky was stolen from the uncovered aquarium.
She's concerned about the lizard's well-being: it must live in a heated area and feeds only on bugs. J.D. is also worried about it, she said.
"The poor kid is missing the gecko."
She added that the gecko was becoming popular with the Minaker's customers. "People came in every day to see him."
Lucky is about 15 centimetres long and has yellow and lavender colouring.
While she hopes for his return, Minaker-Silver recently purchased another, much smaller gecko to occupy the tank.
She now keeps it close to her work station and is able to keep an eye on him.
The smaller lizard has been named Lucky Jr.
