New Cham Owner - Plants

imodel May 23, 2006 05:50 PM

I have heard so many things about the coreect plants I can use in my enclosure, some say Ficus, some pothos some say others. Really what is the best ones to use?
I just bought a 4 month old male Veiled, seems happy and healthy, the only thing that concerns me is when walking he does this crazy rocking motion, back and forth, i chalk it up to hesitation on where he steps?

Can anyone respond to the plant or rocking?
THank you
Len

You said..."I just bought a 4 month old male Veiled, seems happy and healthy, the only thing that concerns me is when walking he does this crazy rocking motion, back and forth, i chalk it up to hesitation on where he steps?"...the rocking you are talking about is the chameleon trying to mimic a leaf blowing in the wind....and its perfectly normal.

You said..."I have heard so many things about the coreect plants I can use in my enclosure, some say Ficus, some pothos some say others. I also run a lot of water through the soil to try to get rid of any insecticides or fertilizers that are in the soil. I then cover the soil with stones that are large enough that the chameleon can't ingest them...or with a type of washed sandbox sand that I have found that doesn't cause them impactions.

I usually use pothos in my veiled cages, but ficus and hybiscus are used by many people too.

Veiled chameleons become omnivores when they reach about 5 or 6 months of age, so they may eat the leaves of the plants. At that age, you can provide them with some fruits (apple, pear, melon, berries, etc.) veggies (diced sweet red peppers, squash, sweet potato, etc.) and greens (dandelion greens, kale, collards, endive, etc.) too.

I use mainly pothos in my cages. I also use shefferlera plants and ficus for my chameleons.Check out any local reptile store, they should have a complete list of non toxic plant. Just remember to thoroughly wash the plants to get rid of any insecticides or leaf protectants.
