Housing 2 different geckos together...

la_blu_girl Jun 06, 2006 04:11 PM

Hey everyone, I hope you can help me out with this one...

I have a female leopard gecko. I have had her for 4 years now, and she has always been alone. I recently have been offered an African fat tail gecko, which is the same species as the leopard just different markings basically. It is also a female and about 2 years old. I'm just wondering if it would be difficult for me to have them live together; will they get along, Should I make a new home for them and introduce them both as new comers, other than adding one to the others enclosure...

If anyone has any knowledge of this, I would really appreciate it!

When it comes to geckos, its best to keep them separate. There are many reasons for keeping them alone. Especially different species.
1. There will be be fights for hides, food, etc.
2. There is a hightened chance for the spread of disease.
3. There is also the stress that an animal endures when he feels insecure because of anotehr tankmate.

Keeping two geckos of similar size of the SAME species, both females can work, but not always, works i would say 50% of thet time
Keeping two geckos of a DIFERRENT species, both females, does not work 75% of the time.

I temporarily had to mix my one pictus with the leopard geckos, because my geckos are in a rack system and they dont have lids, and i thought, that the cornsnake might slip in there and eat them (cornsnake had gotten out, iguanas knocked cage over). So i put them all in the same tank with a lid until i found the cornsnake (which hasnt happened in 7 days). ANd by the next day (Both my leos who are around 8-9 inches each) both had severe bite marks all over their heads, body and tails. The tankmate, the pictus gecko, had been biting whoever has entered the hide that it was occupying.

Anyways, if you want to see pics i will show you, but its sad to see the injuries that they have had from a negligent mistake Ive done.
Please dont mix species for the sake of the animals.

I have to second not housing these two species of geckos together. Though they may look similar they are not the same species. Fat tails for one thing, don't come from teh same area of the world as leopards (one is Africa, the other Pakistan (or is it Iraq?). I don't know enough about fat tails to know what their temporment is in regards to other lizards around them, but problems can certainly occure even if both lizards are the same species.

Also, your leopard is used to being alone in her cage, so having a strange female of another species added in, would stress her, and possibly one or both lizards could wind up being injuried, over stressed etc.

It's better to be safe than sorry and keep them housed separately.

you were right first time lady, it was pakistan. African fat tails are also great beginner geckos. Temperment is just like leos. However, AFTs require more humidty than leos, so they require a different environment. If placed in the same tank, one of the two would be unhappy. It would be either too dry or too wet, too cold or too hot. bottom line is, your babies would not be happy, and you dont want that to happen.
