should my beardie have a mirror?

larney08 Jun 16, 2006 01:19 AM

a couple of weeks ago i gave my bearded dragon a mirror for his enclosure because i noticed he loved his reflection in the glass of his enclosure and also loved to sit on the window seal and look at him self and scratch at it. When i put the mirror in he got really vicious at it and tried biting it but once he got used to it he loves it and sits by it and even sleeps next to it. i move it around different parts of his enclosure so its not always in the same spot. Is this ok to do? also my beardie loves my dog and he follows him around the house and even uses the doggy door to go inside and outside my dog is fine with my beardie and has never tried to attack him. my beardie has never ran away and always comes back through the doggy door when my dog does but i always keep i close eye on him. should i continue to let this happen or stop it? my beardie loves to have his freedom to rome around the house but also spends lots of time in his enclosure too. thanks for your help.

I wouldn't put the mirror into your dragon's cage, especially if he is a male. Male bearded dragons can be very territorial and if they think there is another male around, they could become aggressive, stressed, stop eating, etc. Best not to have the mirror.

I wouldn't let your dragon go outside alone, even if he is good at following your dog in and out. It is just too easy for harm to come to your dragon unsupervised. Even eating the wrong kind of bug (fireflies expecially) can prove fatal to your dragon. Also, once outside and out of sight, there is no way to be sure no harm comes to your dragon, whether he gets run over because he follows your dog across the street or sidewalk, becomes lost or injuried by other dogs or cats (not to mention birds such as gulls, crows, etc). Somebody could see him and snatch him up as well as many other possibilities.

It is fine to have your dragon outside or roaming the house, as long as you are there to watch him all the time he is out of his cage. Especially if he goes outside for the above reasons. With you there, you can act to protect your dragon from what ever danger comes along.
