Bufo paracnemis/Roccoco Toad in Tub?

hollowaymcc Jul 31, 2003 07:27 PM

My kid wants to get a roccoco toad and keep in in an open enamelled bathtub that is 16 inches high, 45 inches long, and 18 inches wide. It would only get indirect sunlight in a bright bathroom--is that enough to keep it healthy? Could the toad jump out? Is is enough room for exercise? Would it get bored staring at white walls? How big a water bowl is needed? The room is reasonably warm but probably goes down to 66 on winter nights. Also, can you really feed them only insects? How many crickets and how often?

Thank you. We want to make sure the toad is happy. If Ajay and Troy Mouck have any more experience from a year ago we'd appreciate it.

Well I'll see what I can find out for you. Or see if I can find someone who knows more about Rocco Toads. But i would say the tub is fine as long as you have something over top of it and you have a substrate in the bottom of at least an 1". And a water bowl at least as big around as it is, and a heat lamp. Those are general rules of husbandry for toads. I'll try to find more details liek I said.

ROCCOCO TOAD
Bufo paracnemis

Roccoco Toads are native to tropical Central South America where they are usually found in forested regions near water. These nocturnal toads will eat almost anything that will fit in their mouths.

Maximum size: 10”

Life span: to 40 years

Lighting: Full spectrum fluorescent UV bulbs will bring out the natural colors of the toads.

Temperature range: 72° -78°F

Food: Crickets, waxworms, earthworms, feeder fish, or pinkie mice coated in calcium and vitamin powder. These toads have voracious appetites must be kept well fed

Water: A bowl of clean, dechlorinated water should always be available.

Housing/Habitat: They should be housed in a tropical terrarium with an under tank heating pad at one end and a thick layer of soft, slightly moist soil. Hiding places such as bark or roots should be provided. The terrarium must be well ventilated and the substrate changed frequently.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for the good info. Kid is now interested in fire-bellied newts or something, so the Rococo acquisition may be moot. His green anole is not looking great (green but skinny, with black spots behind eyes, and not too interested in water drops or even baby food) so I want him to focus on getting the anole happy before getting new pets. The anole shares a 20 gal with a green tree frog--not sure this is a great combo because the frog is an aggressive hunter and might be getting all the crickets. Also, I think the anole needs UV, etc.
