Where can I find moss for my Treefrog Terrarium?

draco_122474 May 03, 2004 07:50 PM

Hi, if anyone can tell me where I can find moss for my terrarium I would appreciate it. Preferably in the Mississauga and Etobicoke area.

Thanks,

Try garden and craft centers.

I saw they had moss at our local Petsmart here in Kitchener so you could always call your Petsmart and see if they have some. Do you have a Big Al's in your area? They may have some too.

Big Al's sells java moss, which is great for terrariums if you can keep it moist at all times. Garden moss may or may not work. It is temperate moss, so it might not last longer than a season or two in your terrarium, due to missing out on its dormant phase. I am currently experimenting with 'wild' moss in my terr, and so far so good. I collected small samples of several different types, and some have done very well and some have not. They have not been in there long though, so I can't say how they do long-term. I didn't do anything special to the wild moss other than check for slugs and give it a rinse in RO water. I did notice that I introduced springtails into my terrarium, but they seem to be gone now, and if I had animals in there, I'm sure they would have gladly eaten them!
