Common Toads in Vancouver

I admit that I know very little about toads, but I am willing to learn if you will help me.

Today at work (Wal-Mart), we receieved a shipment of plants from Vancouver and got an uninvited guest, a toad. I spent much of the day looking for him (a toad wouldn't do very well in a wal-mart stock room especially since we have ferril cats living back there). He ended up being found all the way on the other side of the store. Turns out he hopped back onto the skid that had the trees and took a trip down to seasonal. The poor guy looked so scared when we caught him, but he looked really happy when we gave him some water. I'd imagine he'd be dehydrated after the trip from Vancouver to Calgary. He seemed pretty scared, I don't blame him though. One of the girls took him home, she has a tank and crickets already. She's going to try to find out what type of toad he is.

I've looked up online and he seems to resemble a Fowler Toad. Are these toads native to Vancouver area? Or are there any toads that look similar to the Fowler toad that are common in the area?

Unfortunately since my friend has him, I can't take a digital picture of him, I'll talk to her later and see if she can get her hands on a camera to help identify him.

She is going to take him to a few pet stores to see if any of the staff know what type he is. If he is a toad that is native to Calgary, we are planning on releasing him so he can have a happy life in the wild, but otherwise he will become her pet. Does that sound like a good idea?

Turns out that the toad was an endangered one (can't remember the name) and it is illegal to be in Alberta because it isn't natural to the environment YIKES. She wants to just hide it away, but I think we should contact some authorities and let them know we have the toad.

That would probably be the best idea, because if you ever get caught with that frog in your house, you could be subject to hefty fines. Are you sure its endangered?

Even if it was native to Calgary, there could be parasites or other things that could endanger the existing population. Letting it go would be a bad idea.

i have a ton of frogs and toads.
if the toad you guys found looks like the fowler Toad
then it could possibly be an egyptian toad.

also just because the plant shippments came from Vancouver
doesnt mean it would of been a toad from vancouver.

plants and such that they sell at stores like rona home depot
walmart all come originally from places like Colombia
and then are shipped to the states and then to canada.
so that toad could of came from god knows where.
