I like the fluval cannister filters personally, they pack a lot of media in those cannisters which means cleaning less often. They also have good throughput. Another popular and cheaper option, are the Aquaclear hang on type filters. They have a lot less filter area, but balance that out by being easier to clean. They also have a high throughput, depending on the model.

You know, I used to buy inexpensive filters for my turtles, and they just broke down quickly. And I have to say, I hate Fluvals with a passion. I loathe them. The new ones clog easily, my friend with them complains of them non-stop. But definately, exterior canister filters are the way to go.

For my money, the best filter is an Eheim. They're pricy and hard to find in stores, but if you order one off Ebay.com, they're about half the price they are in Canada, even with the shipping, customs and conversion factored in. They run quietly, seal beautifully and keep the water sparklin' clean. I have both the newer self-priming Ecco series and older models, and I love 'em both

I have had three of the fluval cannister filters for about 3 years - A 204, 304 and 404. I did have problems a couple of times with the "Autostop" connector pin valves clogging up. However hagen corrected this on the new models and the new "autostop",which uses a different shutoff method, gives much better throughput and can be purchased separately for about $12. It will go on the older fluval systems tubing - I upgraded all three of my filters to the new connector. This may solve your friends problems, as it is the only bottleneck I can see in the system. Eheim filters have an excellent reputation but are very expensive, even off of ebay. If your friend has the older fluval _03 system rather than the new _04 system, I can't comment on it, having never used it.

My 2 cents
