looking for turtles/tortisi in Ontario

turtle_keeper Sep 30, 2003 08:06 PM

Hello everyone

im new to this site but I have noticed a lack of information regarding purchasing a turtle in canada. There seems to be noone that has any turtles for sale.

If anyone could help me I have been looking for turtles for some time (five years) and it seems almost imposible to find anything but red-eared sliders (though I love them there is no point to buying one from a pet shop or breeder because there are so many that need homes)

If anyone could give me some info on where or how to find other species that would be great! Im not specificaly looking for any species in peticular just a general idea of what's out there and how to get it and aproximat price.

Anywyas thank you very much for your help

Talk to you later
Chris

You just have to know where to look...I've got well over 100 turtles and tortoises, including about 35 species...

You're somewhat right... turtles are harder to come by than let say fish or hamsters. Reason: imported turtles are not allowed to be resold or given away (even their off-springs) and the turtles you see in Canada ARE imported - legally or illegally. That is why you won't see people selling it too openly. Like MattD said, you need to know people and what you want.

Turtles prices start around $50-100, and tortoise prices start around $200. That is just a general guide. What are you looking for?

Cheers,
JJ

Well thats just it im not realy sure

I guess my more preffered species would be any of the musk/mud turtles, various cotters and sliders (excluding red-eared's), possibly maps though I have hered they are harder to keep than the other pond turtles. I have alwyas wanted a three-toed boxturtle but I dont think that it is feasable at this point in time, nore is a red-footed tortis though that would also be at the head of my list.

The sidenecks are interesting though I dont knwo much about them so Im not familiar with species (though i knwo the rarer ones like Matamata ect) Some of the more common ones would be interesting.

I guess that pretty much covers everytihng, im just interested to try keeping new species. I think im mostly interested in baby or juvinile individuals as well just from personal prefferance. That way I may be able to acustum them well to me and being handled.

Anyways thanks for your help

Chris

I think RES and other sliders are all the same... they look different when they are young, but when they get older they start looking more alike as they become darker and lose patterns and colour in their shell. I think a slider is a good start if you don't know much about turtles - hardy and can't mess up. Another good one is a cooter. I feel cooters are more friendly than sliders and more gentle. Maps need cleaner water and are more skittish, but not a bad choice for a beginner though. They look different than the cooters, sliders and painteds.

Musk and mud turtles are bottom-walkers and do not have the same requirements as the basking turtles (slides, cooters, painteds, or maps).

Cheers,
JJ
