Musk turtles illegal to keep in Canada?

Brady Oct 14, 2003 11:56 AM

Someone recently told me that it is illegal to keep common musk turtles (Sternotherus odoratus) in Canada because they can be found in southern most Ontario. Can someone please clarrify if this is the case because I have kept these for a few years now and have never heard this.
Thanks,
Brady

Common musks or stinkpots are listed by COSEWIC as threatened and protected by MNR regulations in Ontario as well.

Does that mean that you can't keep them in Alberta? Or is just in Ontario.
Thanks for your help,
Brady

From what I understand, if they aren't native to alberta than you can keep them, that's how it works here in ontario. For example you can keep western hognose snakes legally in ontario even though they are native to alberta.

Hope this helps
