new russian tortoise

russell101 Jul 22, 2006 06:47 PM

I just obtained a 4 inch russian tortoise. I have him in a 20 gall glass. I have had him for 3 days. I have offered him greens tortoise pellets and banana but he has not eaten. Is this normal. He seems to be active, wondering around his home and basking in his heat light..

I read a small book but these forums seem to be much better. I used a forum for my reef tank and received much help and advise.

please help me get started. Let me know any info you may need about "shelly" to help answer my questions

thanks so much

Most reptiles do take a week or two to get used to their new home. During this adjustment period they may not eat much or at all. For now, make sure you are meeting all it's husbandry requirements, getting the correct basking temps, ambient temperatures, sufficient hides/cover areas, water, humidity etc. Keep direct interaction with the tortoise (ie handling) to a minimum or not at all during this adjustment period. Keep offering food, even if he shows no interest. If it doesn't start to eat in a week or two, it may be necessary to consult with a vet to see if there are other reasons the turtle isn't eating. (ie illness, internal parasites, dehydration etc.)

thanks for the reply. I read that a good basking temp. was 85 degrees and the other side temp should be 75 degrees. I have reached theese temps. Can you tell me about the humidity issues and what I should do?
